Working with a client looking to accomplish some rather large goals we have found that he is able to change his paradigms and  experiencing  phenomenal success, but inevitably he will get comfortable  or have an event that causes him to revert back to his old thoughts and behaviors. This giving him results that he doesn’t want. The first step to making lasting changes is deciding the person  he wants to be, then becoming that person moving forward. After that we can work on how to make those changes permanent and not reverting to his old self. Below are some of the tools we are employing.

Deciding who you want to be is a deeply personal and reflective process that involves self-discovery, self-awareness, and intentional choices. It’s about defining your values, aspirations, and the kind of person you aim to become. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate this journey:

1. Self-Reflection: Take time to reflect on your current self, your strengths, weaknesses, desires, and the aspects of your life that bring you joy or fulfillment. Consider the areas you’d like to improve or the qualities you want to embody.

2. Identify Values: Determine your core values—those fundamental principles that guide your decisions and actions. Values represent what you stand for and are a compass for making choices aligned with your authentic self.

3. Set Intentional Goals: Set both short-term and long-term goals that reflect the person you aspire to become. These goals should encompass various areas of your life, such as personal development, relationships, career, health, and more.

4. Visualize Your Future Self: Imagine yourself as the person you want to be in the future. What does this person look like? How do they behave? How do they interact with others? Visualizing your future self can motivate and guide your actions.

5. Embrace Change and Growth: Recognize that personal growth involves change. Be open to stepping out of your comfort zone, learning new skills, and adopting new habits that align with your desired self.

6. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself throughout this process. It’s okay to have setbacks or moments of uncertainty. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a friend.

7. Surround Yourself with Positivity: Surround yourself with people who support your personal growth journey and align with your values. Minimize interactions with those who bring negativity or hinder your progress.

8. Learn and Educate Yourself: Invest in learning and self-education. Read books, take courses, attend workshops, and engage with resources that contribute to your personal development and growth.

9. Embody the Qualities You Seek: Consider the qualities and traits you admire in others and wish to embody. Strive to cultivate those qualities within yourself through conscious effort and practice.

10. Practice Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness and self-awareness to stay connected with your thoughts, emotions, and actions. Regular reflection can help you stay on track and make necessary adjustments.

11. Embrace Challenges: Challenges are opportunities for growth. Embrace adversity as a chance to demonstrate your resilience and determination to become the person you aspire to be.

12. Review and Adjust: Periodically review your progress and reassess your goals and values. As you evolve, your aspirations and priorities may change. Be willing to adjust your path as needed.

13. Seek Support and Guidance: Consider seeking guidance from mentors, coaches, therapists, or supportive friends who can offer insights, accountability, and encouragement along your journey.

Remember that deciding who you want to be is an ongoing process. It’s not about achieving perfection but about consistently striving to align your actions with your values and aspirations. By taking deliberate steps, practicing self-compassion, and embracing growth, you can shape yourself into the person you want to become and lead a fulfilling and purpose-driven life.
